#fromthefounder
It’s a special year for us.
In addition to the traditional mix of runway shows, parties, and shopping that happens this time of year we wanted to give people something to talk about in addition to whatever the latest trends might be.
After a conversation with Valerie Fletcher, the Executive Director of the Institute for Human Centered Design I couldn’t get something she said out of my head.
“Who is left out?”
That question challenged me to think differently about programming content for this year’s Boston Fashion Week.
We’ve reached out to designers, artists, businesses, museums, schools, and other members of our community to help us inform the themes for each of our AR galleries.
We’ve chosen a theme that relates to fashion for each day of the week in hopes that meaningful conversations around fashion will be one of the most rewarding elements of this year’s festivities.
I followed up with Valerie to ask her if she’d share a message with the BFW community.
“The key to including the folks so often left out is the next step in making it real: listening to what people not like you want and need in order to be included.
The risk is to make a commitment and assume that your intuition will guide you to make it work. Design students are sometimes inculcated with the notion that they have magical powers to understand what others need.
Making sure that those often out are brought in requires creating opportunities for listening with openness to learning.
They are the experts.
It can be humbling but also opens a route to creativity.”
— Valerie Fletcher
Executive Director
Institute for Human Centered Design
In addition to thanking Valerie for the wisdom she shared, I need to thank the organizations that helped us reach beyond our own community to connect with many of the incredibly talented people and interesting content featured throughout this year’s Boston Fashion Week.

The Worth Project
197 years ago the father of haute couture was born. We’re celebrating Charles Frederick Worth’s birthday on Thursday, October 13th during the 28th annual Boston Fashion Week.
Worth’s ties to Boston include dressing one of the city’s most prominent citizens, Isabella Stewart Gardner. A remnant of one of those gowns on display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum became the impetus for The Worth Project.
Boston Fashion Week set a challenge to students in leading local fashion design programs at Lasell University, Massachusetts College of Art + Design, School of Fashion Design, Boston, and UMass Dartmouth.
Full-color illustrations by 15 student designers who have been inspired by the ISGM textile, the Isabella Stewart Gardner, and Charles Frederick Worth will be featured in an AR (augmented reality) gallery in Evans Way Park (across from ISGM) and in the Public Garden.

Worth Wedding Gown from the Lasell Fashion Collection
On 17 Nov 1888 the donor's grandmother, Charlotte Upham, married Walter Cabot Baylies at Emmanuel Church in Boston. The wedding dress that she wore was made by the House of Worth in Paris. The story behind that, as understood from the donor's Mother, is that the House of Worth was having financial difficulties at that time. One of the donor's great grandfathers, George Phineas Upham or Edmund Lincoln Baylies, helped bail them out financially. In appreciation of that, the House of Worth made and gave a wedding dress for that wedding. It was again worn by the donor's sister in 1955 when she was married on Long Island, NY, and slightly altered for this occasion by Bergdorf Goodman.

Digital Fashion and Sustainability
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14
ONLINE
12 NOON
It is well-known that the fashion industry contributes a large amount of pollution to the world. Too many garments end up in landfills, for instance, and sometimes this results from a garment that was used for one Instagram photo. The social impact of fashion can be seen as equally concerning, as it deepens already existing inequalities along the supply chain, and still fails to adequately address issues of diversity and inclusion, as well. In this panel, we’ll explore ways that digital fashion presents a sustainable solution for the fashion industry, lowering the social and environmental impact.

Superhero Arm
Coby Unger met Payton Robinson through a summer camp called Superhero Cyborgs where kids got the opportunity to design their own prosthetic devices or exoskeletons. Payton’s idea was to create what they called a ‘swiss army knife’ of prosthetic attachments. Rather than creating a device with a hook or semi-functional mechanical hand, Payton and Coby decided to create an arsenal of kid-friendly and functional attachments. The LEGO attachment has two functions. The first is as a building tool for fun. More importantly, it is a platform for them to prototype future arm attachments.
