linda - leading lady, local legend

Boston Fashion Week 2018
is dedicated to

Linda Cole Petrosian
(May 26, 1960 - January 2, 2018)

Boston has lost one of its leading ladies of fashion.

Linda Cole Petrosian was a local legend on the catwalk and a shining star on the pages of the many publications she was featured in over her illustrious career. Her bright smile and joyful spirit filled any room she entered. If you were fortunate enough to know her personally or professionally you understood how much more she had to offer. Her warmth, generosity, and humor define the essence of Linda, and it is those qualities that will live on in each of us that knew her.

Please join us in taking a moment to hold her memory in your heart and hope that her friends and family can take comfort in how many lives were touched by her grace.

meet camila!

As we gear up for the fall fashion season we'd like to welcome an exciting new addition to our community,
Boston's newest fashion influencer Camila Guiribitey.

Camila recently moved to Boston with her husband and hopes to develop relationships with local and up-and-coming brands to explore how social media and influencer-based marketing can contribute to their success.

Her vivacious personality is reflected by her flamboyant taste in fashion. She is a dentist by trade, but her love of fashion and passion for philanthropy have opened up new avenues to explore.

In less than a year Camila has taken social media by storm and has enjoyed astonishing engagement on YouTube.
At last count, her Instagram followers have surpassed 281K, and has 811,949 YouTube subscribers! In that same amount of time, she has worked with world-renowned brands like Gucci, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and Dolce and Gabbana.

We look forward to seeing her at fashion events throughout the season. Please help us make her feel welcome, and be sure to keep up with her fashion adventures on Youtube and Instagram.

Fashion Climbing
by Bill Cunningham
Available now.

The untold story of a New York City legend's education in creativity and style. Fashion Climbing is the story of a young man striving to be the person he was born to be: a true original. But although he was one of the city's most recognized and treasured figures, Bill was also one of its most guarded. Written with his infectious joy and one-of-a-kind voice, this memoir was polished, neatly typewritten, and safely stored away in his lifetime. He held off on sharing it--and himself--until his passing. Between these covers, is an education in style, an effervescent tale of a bohemian world as it once was, and a final gift to the readers of one of New York's great characters.

FASHION PROJECTS #5 is devoted to fashion curation, examining the meteoritic rise in relevance of fashion exhibitions.

It features interviews with an eclectic assortment of leading practitioners from different corners of the world. The issue includes long Q&As with Harold Koda, the longtime, recently retired curator of the Met’s Costume Institute, as well as the Museum at FIT’s veteran leader Valerie Steele.

It also features interviews with curators in Antwerp (the ModeMuseum’s Kaat Debo), Toronto (Royal Ontario Museum’s Alexandra Palmer) and Venice (Maria Luisa Frisa); academics studying the field (Hazel Clark, Annamari Vänskä, and Alistair O’Neill); and, giving an on-the-ground perspective, the Met’s head conservator, Sarah Scaturro.

The issue’s cover stars Greer Lankton’s sculptural representation of legendary Vogue editor and Costume Institute doyenne Diana Vreeland, who continues to loom over the field years after her death.

In Treasures Afoot, Kimberly S. Alexander introduces readers to the history of the Georgian shoe. Presenting a series of stories that reveal how shoes were made, sold, and worn during the long eighteenth century, Alexander traces the fortunes and misfortunes of wearers as their footwear was altered to accommodate poor health, flagging finances, and changing styles. She explores the lives and letters of clever apprentices, skilled cordwainers, wealthy merchants, and elegant brides, taking readers on a colorful journey from bustling London streets into ship cargo holds, New England shops, and, ultimately, to the homes of eager consumers.

Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco
In theaters September 14th

Sex Fashion & Disco is a feature documentary-based time capsule concerning Paris and New York between 1969 and 1973 and viewed through the eyes of Antonio Lopez (1943-1987), the dominant fashion illustrator of the time, and told through the lives of his colorful and sometimes outrageous milieu. A native of Puerto Rico and raised in The Bronx, Antonio was a seductive arbiter of style and glamour who, beginning in the 1960s, brought elements of the urban street and ethnicity to bear on a postwar fashion world desperate for change and diversity.

Counted among Antonio’s discoveries—muses of the period—were unusual beauties such as Cathee Dahmen, Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, Tina Chow, Jessica Lange, Jerry Hall and Warhol Superstars Donna Jordan, Jane Forth and Patti D’Arbanville among others. Antonio’s inner circle in New York during this period was also comprised of his personal and creative partner, Juan Ramos (1942-1995), also Puerto Rican-born and raised in Harlem, makeup artist Corey Tippin and photographer Bill Cunningham among others.

Common Threads, Weaving Stories Across Time
Presented by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
On view from October 4, 2018 thru January 13, 2019

Common Threads, Weaving Stories Across Time features the work of contemporary artists, many of whom have been Artists-in-Residence at the Gardner. These artists are redefining textile art through mediums including music, video, and participatory art.Taking its cue from Isabella Stewart Gardner’s own magnificent collection of historic and contemporary textiles, this exhibition explores the ways in which the art of the past continues to inspire artists now. Textiles have been a vehicle for exploring political and personal narratives over the centuries, and in the hands of a select group of boundary-pushing artists today, they invite one to consider anew the stories we tell ourselves, collectively and individually.

Inhabiting Folk Portraits
Presented by
Fruitlands Museum
The Trustees of Reservations
On view thru March 25, 2019

This exhibition showcases twelve of the most impressive portraits from Fruitlands Museum’s remarkable collection of nineteenth-century middle-class portraiture, alongside paintings and writings by the museum’s Guest Artist of 2018, Candice Smith Corby. Corby is an accomplished artist and educator who paints with traditional materials and draws inspiration from literature, familial and personal stories, dreams, memories, and “the pleasure of observing treasured objects.”

Just outside of the main gallery, a dramatic, floor-to-ceiling red velvet cloth leads to an interactive area where visitors of all ages, sizes, and genders may try on clothing or accessories like those seen in the portraits. The hats, shawls, lace collars, and other accessories provide the opportunity for visitors to try on and, as the title says, inhabit each portrait.

ARE YOU BUYING?
Presented by Boston Foundation’s Next Steps for Boston Dance
Downtown Crossing Business Improvement District (BID)
and LuminArtz

A storefront mannequin searches for beauty in this all new theatrical dance performance by Catherine Siller that skewers Western fashion and beauty tropes.

Taking place in a
Downtown Crossing storefront, a fashion mannequin dreams she has it all, traveling back in time through fashion and beauty advertisements from the 1920s to today. Initially thrilled to constantly reinvent herself, she ultimately realizes she’s caught in a loop of desire and dissatisfaction, chasing an ever-shifting beauty ideal.

Siller combines live performance and real-time video with pre-recorded animations, activating layers of characters and objects that appear and dissolve, creating a dreamlike environment projected larger than life in the storefront window. With movement inspired by gestures in the advertisements, Siller inserts her body into this imagined world, transforming herself into a 1920s ingenue, a 1950s housewife, and a 1990s sex object. A humorous and ironic score, mashing up clips from radio and TV commercials, accompanies the performance.

Blow-Up
Presented by Coolidge Corner Theatre
One Night Only!

In 1966, Michelangelo Antonioni transplanted his existentialist ennui to the streets of swinging London for this international sensation, the Italian filmmaker’s first English-language feature.

A countercultural masterpiece about the act of seeing and the art of image making, Blow-Up takes the form of a psychological mystery, starring David Hemmings as a fashion photographer who unknowingly captures a death on film after following two lovers in a park.

Antonioni’s meticulous aesthetic control and intoxicating color palette breathe life into every frame, and the jazzy sounds of Herbie Hancock, a beautifully evasive performance by Vanessa Redgrave, and a cameo by the Yardbirds make the film a transporting time capsule from a bygone era. Blow-Up is a seductive immersion into creative passion, and a brilliant film by one of cinema’s greatest artists.

"Uneasy Beauty: Discomfort in Contemporary Adornment" will bring together 75 examples of contemporary jewelry and costume that demonstrate the immense power of adornment to impact us physically, emotionally, and intellectually (on view October 6, 2018 - April 21, 2019).

Showcasing wearable work in various media from regional and national artists, the exhibition will explore the outer limits of comfort through works that constrict body movement, irritate the skin, make extreme demands, or touch upon sensitive cultural nerves. This exhibition is curated by Suzanne Ramljak (art historian and former editor of Metalsmith magazine) and sponsored by the Caroline R. Graboys Fund, the Coby Foundation, and the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG).

from the founder

"It's important to know when we need to stop, reflect, and receive.  In our competitive world, that might be called a waste of time.  I've learned that those times can be the preamble to periods of enormous growth."

- Fred Rogers

Fifty years ago, a month shy of my 3rd birthday, the first episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired on Public Television. It ran for 31 seasons.

The show and the man became formative influences throughout my childhood and remain important touchstones in my personal life and in my career. Who knows? It could be that years of watching him making a wardobe change at the start of every episode planted the seeds of what would become my career in fashion.

What does this have to do with Boston Fashion Week? I wanted to set the tone for how we will be moving forward with each
opportunity to cultivate and celebrate fashion in all its forms, in and around the city, throughout the rest of the year.

     We will be good neighbors.

We will honor our inner child.

We will embrace play as serious learning.

We will look for the helpers.

We will appreciate others just as they are.

And kindness will be the measure of our success.

Any individual or organization that is interested and able to put together a show or special event is invited to do so. There is no fee to be listed on the official schedule. Those designers/event planners are solely responsible for all aspects of their events including production, promotion, press access and model selection.

In addition to the many independent events taking place throughout the Metro-Boston area and beyond, Boston Fashion Week produces a series of industry and public events/programs designed to tie the week together and increase the visibility of the week as a whole in the press and public eye.

Please note that our online calendar will continue to serve as an umbrella for events scheduled both before and after the official lineup between September 30 thru October 6, 2018. We welcome any fashion related event listings taking place during the Boston fashion season (September thru December 2018).

■ about boston fashion week

Boston Fashion Week was founded as a civic initiative in 1995. The force behind the week has been dedicated to creating opportunities that increase the viability and visibility of the local industry. The series of fashion related events throughout Greater Boston and beyond serves as a platform for both established industry professionals and aspiring newcomers to showcase their work as well as network with peers and the public.

This annual celebration of Boston style featuring a great wealth of local talent, is unique in that it is designed to engage the community directly, at the grassroots level - cultivating fashion as an integral part of the Boston lifestyle. This approach has also begun to attract the interest of national and international designers who are looking to connect authentically with a Boston audience.

Accessibility and diversity in programming allow the public to engage the week on many levels; experiencing a show, taking in an exhibit, participating in an educational program, or joining in the festivities at a party.

The week also contributes to a sense of civic pride about what the region has to offer and how it continues to evolve. The public is invited to become active participants in the local fashion community by supporting local style makers during Boston Fashion Week and throughout the rest of the year.
