Boston Fashion is SMART!

There is no doubt about it. Boston fashion is so smaht.

We started the year by asking the fashion community to challenge conventional thinking regarding the part fashion plays in our daily lives and to help expand the definition of a fashion week in Boston. We asked them to think about how the arts, culture, science, technology and education play a role in what they do and how they want to share it. They met the challenge and have filled the official Boston Fashion Week calendar with clever, creative content designed for the community.

A special thanks to the many upstanding businesses and institutions (listed to the right) who put community at the heart of what they do, and understand the importance of collaboration. We would not have as vibrant a week as we do without them.

Now we invite you to do the same as attendees. Don't waste a single opportunity to engage with what Boston's fashion scene has to offer, whether it's the shows, the parties, the installations, the shopping, or the educational programming.

Read the schedule carefully and customize your itinerary for the week to reflect your personal tastes and interests. Make it your own!

Keep up to date by subscribing to our email list (at the top of this page) and  share this page with friends who you think would enjoy getting all the latest BFW news. Join us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for updates, as well as exciting opportunities. Our social media hashtag across all platforms will be #BosFW15

As always, we encourage you to continue to seek out fashion professionals in the area, buy local, and be instrumental in helping our local fashion industry thrive. Thank you for your interest in and support of Boston Fashion Week.

the week

              SEPTEMBER 27 thru OCTOBER 3, 2015

Ever since the very first Boston Fashion Week in 1995, the fashion community has looked to leaders in the community who are ready, eager and able to step up and support local fashion talent. This year is no exception. The many businesses, organizations and individuals who spend their time and resources to make things happen are the true patrons of fashion in the city.

This year we have one organization that has gone above and beyond to provide innovative and accessible experiences for our fashionable citizens. The Downtown Boston Business Improvement District (BID) has rallied behind Platform Downtown, the brainchild of stylist and event producer Terri Mahn. Join us in celebrating their efforts!

Projected Beginnings

Presented by
at Boston Fashion Week

This exhibit celebrates the multi-media expressions of artist, Bob Packert, while illuminating the relationship between 2 & 3-dimensional pieces. For this gallery show for Platform Downtown at Boston Fashion Week Bob Packert will be collaborating with Minneapolis based visual artist, Rachel Palmer. Palmer works in the realm of visual design and live performance. Predominantly performing at underground music events, Rachel works with artists of various mediums ranging from promotional music videos to animated photography.

Sillage
Presented by
at Boston Fashion Week

Mono no aware is a Japanese phrase used to describe the beauty of an ephemeral thing. Transience underpins Sadie Dayton’s current work entitled, Sillage. The word connotes fleeting sensual experience - the scent that lingers in the air, the trail left in water, the impression made in space after something or someone has been and gone. Dayton creates visual haiku. Her poetic images offer us the intangible and evanescent with layered textures of fabric, dye and soot. She gracefully conveys vulnerability and strength. Our imagination is engaged by her nuanced gestures and we are invited to complete the cycle with our own envisioning.

Jared & Noni will be collaborating with dancers, Maz and Django in a new performance piece, 'Ghost Note' fusing fashion, movement and fluid grooves with photographer, Sadie Dayton’s exhibit, Sillage.

White Wash

Engaged Body Exhibition
featuring Rapid Jewelry Collection
Presented by Design Museum Boston

The ability to create makes us human, but as always, with new tools come new possibilities. Engaged Body presents a variety of work that allows us to travel to new places, experience environments at a different scale, and create style like never before. The exhibition features Rapid Jewelry, a collection of pieces curated through Design Museum’s international call for 3D printed jewelry

Engaged Body is co-curated by Design Museum Boston and the Boston Architectural College.  This exhibit will bring new audiences to digital fabrication culture and its global influence in the design disciplines.  Digital applications enable designers to imagine and fashion individualized work – from bracelets to kinetic surfaces that behave differently according to their environment.  Each work has its own ways of coming in to being through its material condition and its reciprocal environment – whether it is the body or topography.  Each work aspires to hold cultural expression in its form.

This exhibit and its complementary programming are an opportunity to connect people with a wide variety of interests, from digital animation to product design and architecture.

My Journey by Donna Karan - Book Release

“What we take for granted often comes from the most revolutionary of sources. In New York in the 1980s, no one was more radical than Donna Karan. While ‘dress for success’ was the mantra of that time, Donna never saw that as a directive to simply ape what guys wore. She created a way of dressing that was womanly, practical, and empowering. The singularity of her vision and the courage of her actions brought New York to the world—and the world to New York.” —Anna Wintour

Donna Karan in Conversation
Presented by 92Y

In her new deeply personal and sometimes provocative memoir My Journey designer Donna Karan shares her life story, including intimate and candid stories of her difficult and isolated childhood (the daughter of a tailor and a showroom model-turned-Seventh Avenue saleswoman); her nearly five decades in an ever-evolving fashion industry; her two marriages; motherhood; and her spiritual journey over the last twenty years. Since she introduced her game-changing Seven Easy Pieces fashion collection in 1985 (which allowed working women to trade their manly suits for sensual, comfortable separates), she has never lost sight of her life goal: to empower women. In this, her first book, she interweaves the journey of her incredible career (from scrappy Anne Klein intern to lifestyle guru) with her personal ups and downs as a young woman plagued by insecurities, a wife and mother straddling the personal and the professional, and a spiritual seeker and philanthropist.

19th Century Black Fashion
Presented by The Cooper Gallery

The Cooper Gallery of African & African American Art welcomes Jay Calderin, founder of Boston Fashion Week, for a conversation with Vera Grant, Director of the Cooper Gallery about African and African American fashion. He will share his response to the incredible clothing, styles, and costumes displayed in the current Cooper Gallery show “Black Chronicles II.”  “Black Chronicles II” features more than 100 photos of  black British subjects in the late 1800s to early 1900s, including selections from the recently discovered archive of the London Stereoscopic Company. The clothing and costuming in the exhibition opens discussions about identity, perception and more.

This event is part of Sunday Afternoon at the Cooper Gallery: a series of talks on perspectives and practices in African and African American Art.

BLACK CHRONICLES II
- U.S. Premiere

Presented by Autograph ABP
at the Ethelbert Cooper Gallery
of African & African American Art

The stunning mix of rare and mostly never-scene images depicts both ordinary and prominent citizens — artists, dignitaries, servicemen, missionaries, students, businessmen, and international royalty — captured in portraits by professional photographers.

The exhibition presents more than 100 photographs, focusing on a newly rediscovered series of exquisitely rendered photographic portraits from the Hulton Archive’s London Stereoscopic Company collection, including more than 30 portraits of The African Choir, which toured Britain between 1891 and 1893.  Original glass photographic plates were used to develop stunning, life-size and larger-scale portraits that line the walls.  Buried deeply in the archives for decades, these images are presented for the first time in 125 years, alongside a selection of original albumen cartes-de-visite (calling cards) that became popular collectibles in the late 19th century.

Native Fashion Now
opens at the Peabody Essex Museum
on view November 21, 2015 to March 6, 2016

From vibrant street clothing to exquisite haute couture, this exhibition celebrates the visual range, creative expression and political nuance of Native American fashion. Nearly 100 works spanning the last 50 years explore the vitality of Native fashion designers and artists from pioneering Native style-makers to today's maverick designers making their mark in today's world of fashion. Also examined is how non-Native designers adopt and translate traditional Native American design motifs in their own work, including Isaac Mizrahi's now iconic Totem Pole Dress.

Featuring contemporary garments, accessories and footwear spanning a variety of genres and materials, these designers traverse cross-cultural boundaries between creative expressions and cultural borrowing. From one of Patricia Michaels' (Taos Pueblo) recent finale ensembles from the reality television series Project Runway to Jamie Okuma's (Luiseño/Shoshone-Bannock) dramatically beaded Christian Louboutin boots and innovative works made from mylar, vinyl and stainless steel, Native Fashion Now underscores Native concepts of dress and beauty, which are inextricably bound to identity and tradition in a rapidly changing world.

#techstyle

Presented by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Clothes that respond to the environment, fabrics that are “grown,” dresses you can tweet, and garments that come off a 3-D printer ready to wear—all of these innovations are poised to have a profound impact on the future of the fashion industry. Designers have embraced these innovations and #techstyle will explore how the synergy between fashion and technology is not only changing the way designers design, but also the way people interact with their clothing.

#techstyle will draw on the MFA’s collection of contemporary fashion and accessories, and will feature key pieces from innovators in the field including a digitally-printed dress from Alexander McQueen’s Plato’s Atlantis collection (Spring/Summer 2010/2011) and Iris Van Herpen’s 3-D printed dress (2013) produced in collaboration with MIT designer and assistant professor Neri Oxman.

Visitors will experience the cutting edge of hi-tech fashion with special commissions created by Cute Circuit, The Unseen, Hussein Chalayan, and Cambridge-based Nervous System.

■ how to participate in BFW

Anyone who is interested and able to put together their own show or special event is invited to do so. There is no fee to be listed on the official schedule. All events that take place during Boston Fashion Week are independently produced by the designers and event planners involved in those particular projects. Those designers/event planners are solely responsible for all aspects of their events including production, promotion, press access and model selection.

In addition to the many independent events taking place throughout the Metro-Boston area and beyond, Boston Fashion Week produces a series of industry and public events/programs designed to tie the week together and increase the visibility of the week as a whole in the press and public eye.

Please note that our online calendar will continue to serve as an umbrella for events scheduled both before and after the official lineup between September 27 - October 3, 2015. We welcome any fashion related event listings taking place during the Boston fashion season (September thru December 2015).

However, in an effort to include as many of the events celebrating fashion in our city during Boston Fashion Week, we will continue to accept event listings through September 18, 2015 adding them to the schedule as time and resources permit.

We ask that designers do not contact Boston Fashion Week regarding participation in group events unless we have posted a specific opportunity via email or social media channels.

Sorry!

The calendar is now closed.

■ about boston fashion week

Boston Fashion Week was founded as a civic initiative in 1995. The force behind the week has been dedicated to creating opportunities that increase the viability and visibility of the local industry. The series of fashion related events throughout Greater Boston and beyond serves as a platform for both established industry professionals and aspiring newcomers to showcase their work as well as network with peers and the public.

This annual celebration of Boston style featuring a great wealth of local talent, is unique in that it is designed to engage the community directly, at the grassroots level - cultivating fashion as an integral part of the Boston lifestyle. This approach has also begun to attract the interest of national and international designers who are looking to connect authentically with a Boston audience.

Accessibility and diversity in programming allow the public to engage the week on many levels; experiencing a show, taking in an exhibit, participating in an educational program or joining in the festivities at a party. The week also contributes to a sense of civic pride about what the region has to offer and how it continues to evolve. The public is invited to become active participants in the local fashion community by supporting local style makers during Boston Fashion Week and throughout the rest of the year.

Before we wrap up we want to be sure you know about Boston Creates, a citywide cultural planning process led by the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture.

Please participate in the Boston Creates Community Survey. The survey is open to all adults and youth (age 12+) who live or work in the Boston area. So, please pass along the survey link to your friends and family!

Your answers will:
